I guess the good thing is that I have a job that I like and now I can buy games faster than I can play them again. Of course this is because I've fallen for PSN flash sales and the like... But I've also started preordering and importing games again too.

I'm not sure what to talk about right now. I guess I've really upped my Japanese studies and I just beat Tokyo Xanadu and I'm working on Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky First Chapter in Japanese. Actually I reread my thoughts on the game from a few years ago and I have to say that particular introduction scene to Olivier came off as less homophobic to me this time around. It could be something about not understanding the language, but it seemed like Shera calls Olivier a hedonist and Estelle just calls him a weirdo and wonders if all people in Erebonia are like that in which Joshua is like...um no... And Joshua sounded like he was saying he wasn't interested in a homosexual relationship but that one was definitely the hardest to really figure out. Either way Olivier for some reason comes off as way more flashy and I think it is fair for someone to think he is "weird".

I guess I can go back to Tokyo Xanadu and it may be the first game where I only want platonic ships. I can see ship potential for basically anyone and the main character but I just prefer friendship between all of them, especially the main duo. I'm kinda curious what types of fic will come out when the English-speaking fandom begins, though it's hard for me to gauge if there will be a big enough one or not. There's more characters and an easier world to work with in Tokyo Xanadu than in Ys games, and it's a one-off so there's no issues with slow buildup or people just holding off like with the Trails series... Speaking of Ys, I wrote a ficlet for Ys I earlier this year that I should revise and post somewhere, just so there is more fic for the first game than like Adol/Dogi porn...

I'm not sure what else to write for now, just because there are too many things I could write about. I guess that means I need to start writing here again so I don't have that problem :D
I actually should have typed this up a while ago, since I finished the game at the end of August. But I was lazy then and more inspired now, after listening to the soundtrack on repeat a few times.

So in short - good turn-based JRPG with a focus on character interactions, but with two big drawbacks. One, the prologue is quite boring and the character interactions in it don't make up for it (especially if you have issues with it, which I will explain below under the cut). Two, the game ends decently well but leaves a very big hook/cliffhanger for the sequel, which is a bummer for non-Japanese-speaking fans since the other games in this series have not been localized. This game, otherwise known as Sora no Kiseki FC, is the first chapter in a trilogy. The second I believe is a sequel that starts almost immediately after the first game, while the third is a little bit later. Recently, a fourth game in the series that is also not involving FC characters was released in Japan. Translation and porting has been an issue since these games are huge and XSEED was not going to deal with the dual UMDs of Sora no Kiseki SC.

Overall I recommend it - battle mechanics are solid, music is good enough, plot is interesting and develops nicely once you are past the prologue (about 5 hours for me). If you aren't ready to invest 40+ hours into the game and try it for at least 5 hours then it's probably not for you. If you hate lots of dialogue this isn't for you. If you hate unresolved endings this is DEFINITELY not for you. Unless you know Japanese, then get all 3.

Now for spoiler-filled reasons for other little things that bothered me, which are more YMMV. )
Got quite a bit further into the game (into Chapter 2 now, 15-ish hours) while on vacation and the game is picking up, but somehow feels more of a slow burn than I expected. Compared to Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume and Crisis Core, this game feels long.

Anyway, spoilers so hiding under a cut...

In other news, I am replaying FFXII along with the LPer HCBailly. This game is freaking long and doing it completion-style is probably a terrible idea. But it is kind of fun doing what he's doing and hearing the commentary. I'm not sure I'd follow along in other games with "MMORPG" feel because sometimes I have to watch exactly how he moves on the map or get lost, whereas I don't think I'd be as lost in other games.

>>Holy crap! While looking up names, I saw on wiki that Joshua Bright is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch. No wonder the voice seemed lower than expected. Also Scherazard's Sadist Whip attack is freaky with that voice. Gives me the shivers...
minor spoilers for LoH:TitS )

In other news, I'm a little further in Lost Odyssey as well and the queen Ming has one weird outfit. I know JRPGs try to put the sexy and the colorful together, but seriously she's in a leotard with a higher upper cape that stops waist-level and this low cape thing that starts around her buttcrack area and then armor-plate leg wear that is super thick around her thighs then skin-tight at her lower body. Like a dress with some midriff cutouts would make hella more sense and be just as "sexy". The sad thing is this outfit makes her so ridiculous that I can't take her seriously. I've only gotten so far as to meet her so I don't know her character well at all, but the distraction...
